HandleLord gives you two ways to watch a handle: daily checks, or instant monitoring that checks every minute. Both notify you as soon as the check finds the handle available. The difference is how long a released handle can sit unnoticed before that check happens.
Here’s how to decide.
The question to ask: who else wants it?
The right choice depends less on how much you want a handle and more on how many other people want it too.
When a handle is released, it goes to whoever claims it first (see how usernames become available). If nobody else is looking, a day’s delay costs you nothing. If other people and tools are watching the same name, a day is far too long.
When daily is enough
Daily checks make sense for handles that are:
- Long or specific, like
@mara_ceramics_nyc. - Personal, like your full name with a middle initial.
- A backup option, a nice-to-have alternative rather than your first choice.
For these, the chance that someone else claims it within hours of release is low.
When you want instant
Choose instant monitoring for handles that are:
- Short. A handful of characters, or a single common word.
- Valuable. Brand names, product names, popular first names.
- Already contested. If you’ve seen the handle change hands before, other people are watching it too.
For these, minutes matter. A check every minute gives you the best chance of being first.

Be ready when the alert arrives
Monitoring only closes half the gap. The other half is you. When you get a notification:
- Stay logged in to X on the device you’ll use, so there’s no password reset between you and the rename.
- Know where the setting lives. Username changes are in your account settings.
- Act immediately. The notification means the handle was available when checked, not that it’s reserved for you.
